Here's an interesting 4-minute video by Alisa Miller, head of Public Radio International. She talks about why -- though we want to know more about the world than ever -- the US media is actually showing less. Eye-opening stats and graphs.
How about here? What do you think of the content of the current mainstream news in the Philippines?
What are the "trending" news on tv and print and what are the "under-documented issues" that you think the media must focus on?
The current mainstream news in the Philippines gives a lot of information. When I say a lot, I mean A LOT. Just like the girlfriend of the murder victim Ramgen Revilla, Janelle Manahan's check out from the hospital. The media went out of its way by giving out information on where she would stay and when she will go to the fiscal's office for her statement. Manahan is a star witness of a murder case that is against Ramgen's family. She is already in grave danger and it won't help her safety if the media give out vital information about her movements and plans. Media here in the Philippines should know the limit of the information they give out and if it hampers some police operation just like Ramgen's murder case, they should stop and give the public a broad view of the situation, not a detailed story.
ReplyDeleteThe current mainstream here in the philippines serves as the eyes of the people outside media. It gives us knowledge on what is happening on politics , world , crimes etc. The trending issues right now is about Ramgen's revilla murder case , Gloria macapagal's warrant of arrest. etc. Why not focus on under documented issues like the poor people what should be the steps to stop it or not lessen it.

ReplyDeleteI know it's very late for me to comment on this but I'd still want to share my opinion. I believe that our country has a lot of political issues and sad to say that media is 80% focusing to it. I would suggest that they should be balance to every issues since the society rely most to them. Also, do not just aim from being first in the news but rather be right first so that people could be informed CORRECTLY. Because what is mostly happening is that the media itself manipulate the news to look agreeably to people. For example the issues on RH BILL, the government wants to be passed this and I think their way to make the society agree on this is by the use of media. Since the government tells that we are already overpopulated, a lot of people are suffering from poverty, the media only shows one side. We're in the third world but I do not believe that we are that poor.

ReplyDeleteOur local news media, and its overseas counterparts have a shared love for documenting news of violence, scandals, and things that can easily capture mass viewership. If the spotlight, was more often placed on the issues that need highlighting, as well as the issues that need to be known. We'll surely have effective journalism, that can serve its purpose..Public Enlightenment
