When is the appropriate and right time to teach Media Ethics? First, Second, Third or Fourth Year?

When is the appropriate and right time to teach Media Ethics? First, Second, Third or Fourth Year?
This question suddenly comes to my mind when I saw the list of major subjects that I took-up for the previous years? Introduction to Communication, Theater Arts, Educational Technology, these are few of the subjects that we took up during our early years in this program, it seems that these are basic subjects to our course, but is Media Ethics not a basic one?
Based on your personal perception when is the right and appropriate time to teach Media Ethics to the future media practitioners? Find time to think about this.

  1. Interesting question, Peter. What's your take on this?

  2. I believe Ma'am that this subject should teach already in our early years in this course, this should consider as one of the most fundamental subjects. From the very start, we should already be guided by ethics so that we could be more sensitive and critically aware on every production that we made. Based on my experience, we have made already a lot of productions wherein we don't have the full understanding of the nature of ethics in terms on how we present our materials and how we make our materials. I think second semester for the First Year or first semester of the Second Year will do and appropriate time to teach this subject.

  3. You have a point. Let's forward your suggestion to the department head and dean. This could help in the assessment of the whole program. :) Thanks, Peter.

I also want to hear from the class. What do you think? Do you agree that the course Media Ethics should be taught earlier in college?

    1. I agree and disagree.
i agree that learning media ethics during the first year would be better in terms of building a good ethical foundation amongst students.
then again, i believe that having it during our fourth year keeps it fresh in our minds which is necessary because we will be entering the industry soon.

I'd like to suggest that they move the subject to the first year of school and then have a refresher class during the fourth.

let's be honest, we tend to forget right?

having a good and fun teacher like Ma'am Candice is essential too(no "pambobola" intended) The things that we recall best are the times that we had fun. right? right? :D

  4. I totally agree to what Peter had said Ma'am, actually i have the same thinking when i got to take the subject. Questions like "Why we're learning these things just now?", "Why didn't we apply these things in our previous activities?" and the like. In our previous years, of course we know the basic do's and don'ts in media, but we were not that exposed to those guidelines, regulations and all the limitations. Media Ethics should be one of the first subjects to teach in Mass Communication Course, so that when we do all the major activities in school, we can apply our learning in ethics. By that, the knowledge we've gain will really remain because it's applied in every school work we do.
